Artist Statement My work is a montage of classical and art historical themes, a romantic figurative mix of eastern and western references, are both sensual and spiritual. Along with the appropriated cultural elements are contemporary figures that give the work a modern sense of beauty and timelessness. Layered into and on top of these references art stamps, inserts and linear overlays. The desire is to create a rich tapestry with pastels on paper. The brilliant blue star maps, surrounding the sculptural elements, open up the space and add more meaningful symbolism to these modern works. Eastern religious imagery is dominant in my recent works which depict flying figures, Mahasiddhas of great super-normal miraculous powers; ancient Hindu sculptures, and other classic Indian sculptures from Kaujarano, a group of ancient temples in India. Biography Steve Murillo is a Wichita, Kansas artist, well known for his wall murals and large public art sculptures as well as his brilliant pastel works, which are often studies for his monumental commissions. He received his BFA and MFA from Wichita State University where he was a graduate teaching fellow and professor for twelve years. He was a resident artist at the Michael Karolyi Foundation in southern France and was an Artist-in-Residence for the State of Kansas for three years under an NEA grant, most recently at Rocky Mountain National Park. Murillo maintains a studio and gallery in Old Town Wichita. As artist consultant to the city of Wichita, he has been involved in a number of capital improvement projects including the Light Towers, the Farm Implement Sculpture, a ceramic mural and most recently, a huge Stonehenge-like sculpture solar calendar.
