ANN CHERNOW
b. 1936

Ann Chernow is an internationally known printmaker and painter, and is in many important collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Yale University Art Gallery and The National Museum of Women in the Arts.

Chernow produces masterful lithographs and etching/aquatints -- all in black and white or sepia -- portraying film actresses of the 1920s to 1940s. But rather than concentrate on the glamorous image of the silver screen, she explores the reality of the motion picture business as a stressful, often frightening and sometimes dangerous environment for the women employed there. Her work stresses the relationships these women formed, based on interdependence, trust and mutual understanding. Chernow shows the strengths as well as the frailties of the actresses and tenderly conveys the subtle gestures, glances, smiles, and frowns that carry the viewer into their private moments.

In October 1998, Ann Chernow was one of ten printmakers chosen to represent the United States at the World Print Festival in Ljubjlana, Slovinia. She has been invited to participate in a print workshop in Apricale, Italy, in October 1999, with the resulting work to be shown in Antibes, France, in November.
